Investigative Threat Assessment Process (ITAP), our behavioral threat assessment and management model, teaches a fact-based, systematic process designed to IDENTIFY, INQUIRE, ASSESS, and MANAGE potentially dangerous or violent subjects. A key goal is to distinguish between an individual who MAKES a threat versus one who POSES a threat. Threat Assessment teams and programs are designed to address any behavior or communication that raises concern that a person or situation may pose a danger to the safety of the school, campus, or workplace.

Safeguarding Futures: From Early Intervention to Behavioral Threat Management

Dr. Marisa R. Randazzo

Executive Director of Threat Assessment

Raptor Technologies

In this session, national school safety expert Dr. Marisa Reddy Randazzo will discuss lessons learned -- from her research on school shootings and interviews with school shooters -- about the various ways that school violence can be prevented. She will also draw upon cases of averted violence and her experience handling thousands of threats to illustrate the power of early intervention to get students off the pathway to violence and onto a better path. Her session will include simple steps that school professionals can follow to build early intervention and behavioral threat assessment programs as well as enhance school climate and student connections.

Location: Primrose Hall 6-9

Presenter: Kate Berg

Ensuring school safety extends beyond physical security measures; it requires a proactive approach to recognizing and addressing student mental health concerns before they escalate into crises. This interactive session introduces the Notice. Talk. Act. at School framework, a trauma-informed approach designed to help all school personnel, including teachers, support staff, School Resource Officers (SROs) and safety personnel, identify early warning signs of mental health challenges, engage in supportive conversations, and connect students to appropriate resources.

Participants will gain practical strategies to strengthen school climates by fostering connectedness, trust, and early intervention, ultimately reducing risks of harm to self or others. This session will empower educators, SROs and school safety personnel with tools to enhance their role as trusted adults in the school community.
